Step Outside

The expansive grounds and gardens at Middleton Castle are as much a part of the experience as the rooms inside.

Six acres of land, a medieval moat, and Norfolk farmland beyond.

A six-acre lawn stretches out from the castle walls and the moat, which is original, ancient, and magnificent, wraps around the building on all sides. Beyond the garden, farmland and woodland extend as far as the eye can see.

A large historic castle with multiple towers and battlements, surrounded by a moat with calm water reflecting the structure, and a small brick building with a tiled roof in the foreground, set against a backdrop of green trees and a partly cloudy sky.

THE MOAT

Ancient, intact, and quietly magnificent.

One of Middleton's most distinctive features, the moat dates to the original construction of the castle in 1455 and remains intact today. Stretching 270 metres around the castle walls and home to koi carp and golden rudd, it is as much a living part of the estate as the castle itself. Its reflections in the morning light and the sound of the water in the evening are among the quieter pleasures of a stay at Middleton.

OUTDOOR SPACES

Space to gather, unwind and explore

The six-acre lawn provides ample space for outdoor entertaining, marquee events, lawn games, and simply sitting in the Norfolk sunshine. The formal garden immediately surrounding the castle is maintained to a high standard throughout the year.

“The grounds are stunning and peaceful, and the moat gives it such a charming vibe, while the castle itself feels grand without ever being intimidating.”
