Beyond the Castle Gates

Middleton Castle sits in the northwest corner of Norfolk, one of England's most quietly beautiful counties.

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This corner of Norfolk is defined by vast skies, salt marshes that shift with the tides, ancient market towns, and a coastline that has drawn naturalists, writers and walkers for centuries. Within easy reach of the castle you'll find some of the finest stretches of the north Norfolk coast, quiet country paths through farmland and fenland, grand estates and their gardens, medieval ruins, and a string of market towns each with their own character. Whether you're looking for a bracing walk to the beach, a morning at a local market, or an afternoon exploring the area's history, there's more than enough to fill a stay. The team at Middleton Castle are always happy to make recommendations or help with directions.

MEDIEVAL NORFOLK

Churches & Ruins

Norfolk is known as the county of churches with more than 650 medieval examples still standing across the county - one of the greatest concentrations anywhere in northern Europe. The dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII in the 1530s left many of Norfolk's great priories and abbeys abandoned, and today their ruins are among the most atmospheric medieval remains in Britain.
