Why the Best Corporate Retreats Don't Look Like Corporate Retreats

A conference hotel may have its uses, but what it rarely provides is the kind of environment that makes people think differently, talk honestly, or remember why they joined the company in the first place.

Middleton Castle is not a conference venue; it’s a medieval castle in the North Norfolk countryside with fifteen bedrooms, four reception rooms, a six-acre lawn, and complete privacy. It might not sound particularly corporate, but sometimes that's exactly what is needed for a different kind of escape from the office.

The Case for Somewhere Different

There is reasonable evidence that, particularly in a work context, our environment shapes our thinking. The same people who sit in silence in a meeting room will often talk more freely around a dinner table in an unfamiliar place. The decisions that didn't quite get over the line in the boardroom might resolve themselves during a walk across the grounds, or over a drink in the billiards room after dinner.

Whether you’re looking to bring your team together, hunker down and focus on strategy, or simply offer an alternative to predictable office away-days, Middleton Castle is a rare find.

What Middleton Offers

An unconventional corporate retreat doesn’t have to mean compromising on the practicalities. Middleton Castle has high-speed fibre optic WiFi throughout, an optional boardroom arrangement with a 60" TV, flipcharts, a Bluetooth speaker, and four reception rooms that can be used for breakout sessions, workshops, or presentations. The oak-panelled dining room seats up to thirty for working lunches and evening dinners, and there’s even a helicopter landing area for grand entrances.

Choosing an exclusive-use venue changes the entire dynamic of your stay; there are no other guests, no shared spaces, and no overheard conversations. A team of fifteen can move through the castle as if it belongs to them because, for the duration of the stay, it does.

More Than a Strategy Session

The castle offers clay pigeon shooting, archery, and axe throwing for groups looking to break up their days and, with the Norfolk coastline only half an hour away, an early morning dip before work becomes an enticing possibility.

Middleton Castle also runs a Traitors-style murder mystery experience – a more creative (and potentially dramatic) option for teams looking for a unique experience that goes above and beyond yet another round of drinks in a hotel bar.

Getting There

King's Cross to King's Lynn is a direct train journey of just under two hours, with a twenty-minute drive to the castle from the station. For teams travelling from further afield, London Stansted is approximately an hour and half drive from the castle gates.
